St Matthew’s branch of this worldwide organisation was formed on All Saints Day 1934. There has always been a good membership and at present this stands at 46. The branch meets on the second Tuesday in each month and all meetings are open to all, and anyone who comes along will be made very welcome. Our meetings usually take the form of a short service followed by an invited speaker and concludes with a cup of tea and a chat to friends. Qualification for membership has altered over the years to reflect the change in society and is open to all who have been baptised (both men and women) in the name of the Holy Trinity and believe in and uphold the aims and objects of the Mothers’ Union.
Members who find themselves too busy with work and family to attend regular meetings can keep up to date on the Mothers’ Union website at http://www.themothersunion.org. Other members who are unable to attend meetings through ill health or age but are much needed may join the Indoor Members’ Prayer Circle (IMPC) and receive literature at regular intervals to guide them in prayer.
A prayer chain is organised in the Diocese and is linked to every Deanery where prayers are constantly linked. This link is made stronger when it is joined nationally and internationally with our Wave of Prayer which follows the countries around the world.
In the Diocese we run the Away From It All (AFIA) scheme which enables families who are in need to take a holiday.
Our branch supports the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) at the Royal Oldham Hospital making tiny garments, toys and blankets etc and sadly, shrouds for the unfortunate ones who are stillborn. This work is done on a continuous basis.
Deanery, Archdeaconry and Diocesan events are also supported by our branch and these usually take the form of a service followed by refreshments and an opportunity to meet and chat to friends from other branches.
The Literature Department produces some fine publications as well as greetings cards, calendars and diaries.
